Winter Hair Care
Dull dry hair ? Winter is here !
Cold weather or more specifically the constant changes from cold to warm environments can play havoc on your hair. The cold, dry air from outside can cause the cuticle layer of the hair to lift. This makes our hair more susceptible to moisture loss, when we enter warm dry rooms, leaving hair dry, brittle and dull. This can also create static, due to the warm heated air and the contact of the hair with other fibres such as hats or sweaters which makes for fly-away hair and all the problems that come with it.
Reduced humidity can also lead to dehydration of the scalp. Dry, itchy, flaky scalps require special attention and you may need to switch your regular shampoo to a treatment shampoo specifically for dandruff that contain zinc or sulphur, which work as an antimicrobial agent to eliminate build-up of sebum and flakes around the follicles.
Wind can also cause damage to our hair. Exposure to strong persistent winds can create tangles in curly or long hair. The wind causes friction of the hair shaft, roughening of the cuticle layer, leading to tangles and split ends. Regular trimming of the hair to remove split ends is the only remedy to treat this problem.
In the winter months, hair needs a lot of tender loving care. Invest in deep conditioning treatments, and moisturising shampoos suitable for your own specific hair type. Moisturised hair is more resistant to split ends and the effects of weathering. There are styling products which help to prevent fly-away hair. Look after the health of your scalp as you would your skin and treat it to an exfoliating scalp mask or therapy shampoo specifically for dry, flaky scalps. Regular trimming of the hair every 6-8 weeks not only removes split ends but makes the hair look healthier.
